Tip #1
Carpet cleaning safety: Chemicals
Most carpet care products out there are relatively safe to use, and only have minimal impact on the environment.
However, some of these products contain toxic chemicals that are harmful both to the person who uses them and to the people who are around those area cleaned.
Use mild products for regular daily cleaning. Use stronger products only for weekly deep cleaning.
Avoid ingredients that are poisonous or harmful to the environment. Wear protective gloves and goggles when mixing or using any cleaning products.
It is sometimes better to clean your carpets more frequently since carpets that are cleaned less often require more and stronger chemicals. Use the stronger chemicals sparingly and carefully.
Some tips when using chemicals to clean your carpet:
» Corrosive chemicals (acids or caustics) can blind you in seconds.
» Always wear goggles to protect your eyes.
» Corrosives can also damage your skin and leave scars.
» Wear gloves to protect your hands.
» Some poisonous chemicals absorb through your skin.
» Always wear gloves when using products containing glycol ethers or ethanolamines.
» Some poisonous chemicals are easily inhaled.
» Be sure that your work area has enough ventilation.
» Mixing different products together can create poisonous chemicals.
» Avoid mixing products, and be sure to rinse out work buckets after each use.

Tip #2
Carpet cleaning: Non-chemicals
Keeping your carpet clean is essential, but you may not know everything about how to clean it properly & efficiently.
Here are some tips to help you with this necessary chore:
The goal is to get your carpet clean as quickly as possible so you can do other things, like relax on the patio or go to a movie!
There are many different types of carpets and cleaning supplies on the market. First, know what type of carpet you have, and second,
choose the cleaning products that are right for your carpet. Some carpet products are misleading. Always read the label.
Decide whether you want to use a non-chemical product that you make at home or a chemical product that you buy at the store.
Your Type of Carpet
What type of carpet do you have? What is it made of? Synthetic fiber, wool, cotton, or another natural material? If synthetic,
what type of synthetic material? Be sure the cleaning product you choose is safe for the type of carpet you have.
In addition, consider the construction of your carpet. A braided rug, for example, can come loose if you use a powerful vacuum on it.
You need to shake it out frequently.
Look at the tag on your carpet and read any instructions that came with your carpet on how to care for it. If there is no tag and no
instructions, you can return to the store where you bought the carpet and find out what type of carpet you have and ask for advice on
cleaning products.
How To Clean a Carpet
To keep your carpet clean using non-chemical products, follow these tips:
» As soon as a spill hits your carpet, or you notice a soiled spot, clean it up right away. Don’t ignore it or put it off to another day. Use a white cloth or white paper towels to blot up the liquid. Don’t scrub, as this will likely set the stain further. Just apply steady pressure to the area until you have blotted up as much as possible.
» Dilute a mild dish detergent with warm water and dab it onto the stain. After a few minutes, blot the stain to remove the soapy water.
» If the stain persists, try hydrogen peroxide on a hidden area of the carpet to make sure it’s safe for your carpet type. If it is safe, dab it onto the stain, wait a few minutes, then blot it up.
» If water, a detergent solution, or hydrogen peroxide don’t work to remove the stain, call a professional to treat it. They will know how to use more powerful chemicals to remove it.
In addition to cleaning up spills and spots as soon as you become aware of them, your carpet should be vacuumed every week and thoroughly cleaned every six months. If you don’t own a carpet cleaning machine, you can rent one at many different places. If you don’t want to do it yourself, you can call the professionals to come out and you and the family can have a day off at the park!

Tip #3
Carpet cleaning: Vacuuming helps
One of the most important things when keeping your carpet clean is vacuuming
Vacuum thoroughly and frequently, especially in high-traffic areas. Bear in mind that walking on soiled carpet permits the soil particles to work their way below the surface of the pile where they are far more difficult to remove and can damage the fibers. Frequent vacuuming removes these particles from the surface before this happens.
Vacuuming Tips
For rooms with light traffic, vacuum the traffic lanes twice weekly and the entire area once weekly. Those areas with heavier traffic require that the traffic lanes be vacuumed daily and the entire area twice weekly. Up to three passes of the machine will suffice for light soiling, but five to seven passes are necessary for heavily soiled areas. Change the vacuuming direction occasionally to help stand the pile upright and reduce matting.
What type of vacuum should you buy?
A good vacuum cleaner is vital to prolonging the beauty and life of your carpet. An inexpensive machine can remove surface dirt but will not effectively remove the hidden dirt and particles embedded in the pile.
We recommend the use of vacuums with a rotating brush or combination beater/brush bar that agitates the carpet pile and mechanically loosens soil for removal by the vacuum. Note that carpet with thick loop pile construction, particularly wool and wool-blend styles, may be sensitive to brushing or rubbing of the pile surface and may become fuzzy. For these products, we recommend the use of a suction-only vacuum or a vacuum with an adjustable brush lifted away from the carpet so it does not agitate the pile. A vacuum with a beater/brush bar can be tested in an inconspicuous location and used if no excessive fuzzing occurs.
Replaceable paper vacuum bags do a better job of trapping the small particles that pass through cloth bags back into the room. High efficiency vacuum bags, also called micro filtration bags, trap even smaller microscopic particles such as mold and mildew spores and dust mite byproducts, often found to be a source of allergies. This type of bag is sold under several brands, such as the "MICRO-LINED" bag available at most vacuum specialty shops, or the "MICRO-CLEAN" bag available at some department and discount stores, and "MICRO FILTRATION" and "MICRO LINER" brands available at Sears stores. These bags are available under other brand names; verify that these bags trap particles smaller than two (2) microns. All vacuum bags should be checked often and replaced when half full.
Make sure the belt is in good condition and that the brush or beater bar rotates when in contact with the carpet. To adjust the vacuum to the correct height setting for the carpet, raise the beater/brush bar to the highest setting and then lower it until it contacts the pile enough to slightly vibrate the carpet several inches away from the machine, but not low enough to cause significant slowing of the motor.
Change the vacuuming direction occasionally to help stand the pile upright and help reduce matting.
Some do's and don'ts when vacuuming
Don't use the sprinkle on carpet powders in your machine. Not a proven fact, but we've done many expensive repairs over the years that could have been caused by this. Here's an even better reason NOT to use it:
1.Ever wonder why you smell it when you vacuum it up? Here's why: The powder is so fine it blows through the vacuum bag and through your machine and back into the air where you are breathing it - that's why you can smell it. Do you really want to be breathing that stuff?
2.Also, the cause of odors in vacuum cleaners is from bacteria growing in the bags. Bags should be changed at least once a month, and more often is better. All of the bags we sell are treated with a chemical that helps destroy the bacteria and odors in bags.
Don't ever pick up drywall soot or clean out the fireplace with your vacuum.
Most of the same things that apply to carpet powder applies to this statement. Let me just say I've seen a lot of expensive repairs due to people unknowingly doing this. A better solution - if you really need to use a vac to clean up large amounts of drywall, or to clean out the fireplace, pick up a cheap $10 vacuum at a yard sale, and use it for that purpose. That way you can have a disposable vac for cleaning up that stuff, and you won't be damaging your good vacuum and facing major repairs.
Don't run your machine on any surface that isn't completely dry.
We all know about shock hazards...I'm talking about vacuuming over a slightly damp carpet. Be especially careful after shampooing the carpets, and be careful around the doorways where snow and rain can be tracked into your home. Running your vacuum cleaner on these surfaces pulls small amounts of moisture into your machine. This can allow some of the parts to corrode and/or rust, causing your repair problems in the future.
Change your bag AT LEAST once a month.
We've already talked about the odor and bacteria problems associated with bags. How long do you keep your garbage sitting around? That bag is one of the dirtiest places in your home, full of germs and bacteria - change it often.
Also, cleaning performance is based largely on that bag. A clogged bag also causes your machine to run hotter and puts more strain on your motor. The few cents you save in bags is lost on the dollars that you'll spend for machine repairs.
Never let your vacuum bag get over half full.
Change your belt about every three months.
Belts are DESIGNED to stretch and wear out, the same as fan belts on cars. Just because they belt hasn't broken doesn't mean that it's not stretched so badly that the beater bar is no longer turning at full speed. If it's been more than three months, change your belt. Again, much of your cleaning performance is linked to this

Carpet dust prevention tips
Preventing soil and dirt from entering the house in the first place means carpet cleaning can be less frequent, thereby reducing the amounts of chemicals and cleanings.
Area rugs or runners can be used for high traffic areas. These rugs should be large enough to capture several footsteps. Experiment with different sizes and textures to see what works best at each doorway. Every few days these mats will become “full” of soil. Therefore, it’s important to vacuum all doorway rugs frequently so that they will continue to capture soil before it is carried into the house.
Also having good windows helps keep dust from entering the home. If you have old windows be sure to replace them with new double pained windows that have a good seal.
Don't forget about the doors. Your doors should have a good seal and be air tight when closed. This will help keep the dust and dirt out on windy days.
Some modern homes ore built so that they are totally enclosed. If possible, the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system in such a home should be operated so that the air pressure just inside each doorway is higher than that of the natural air outdoors. Doing so will push airborne dust back outside.
When buying an carpet cleaners or shampooers
If you plan on buying your cleaners online look for sites that accept Visa or MasterCard. In this way if the seller does not ship the product or gives you a hard time, you can contact the credit card company and have them reverse the charges or force the company to ship the product.

Tip #5
Dry cleaning carpets: How it works
Dry cleaning your carpet means cleaning it without the use of a liquid cleaning agent such as a detergent. Since liquids are not used, no moisture is retained in the rug after cleaning. Carpets made of fine fibers are usually dry cleaned to prevent them from being damaged. Dry cleaning uses a powder-based solvent.
The solvent is sprinkled or sprayed onto the carpet, then a brush is used to spread the solvent evenly over the entire surface and into the base of the carpet. The solvent is left in the carpet for at least half an hour, or maybe longer, depending on the brand and strength of the solvent. The solvent attracts dirt and dust particles, which dissolve in the solvent and are then vacuumed up.
Before dry cleaning a carpet, you should take a few precautions. Look for any large solid pieces of dirt, grime, or residues of spilled liquids and remove them manually. Chunks or pieces of matter left in the carpet might dissolve when sprayed with the solvent and cause further staining or damage. For the same reason, stains should also be removed to the greatest extent possible before dry cleaning your carpet.
Next, make sure your carpet is as dry as possible. If a liquid was spilled on the carpet the night before, make sure the spot is dry. Such a spill should be blotted up using white cotton, wool, or a soft kitchen towel. Moisture in the carpet can dilute the effect of the powder-based solvent and decrease its effectiveness.
While the dry carpet cleaning method is popular and involves fewer risks than methods using liquid-based cleaning agents, you should follow the cleaning recommendations of your carpet manufacturer. This may be especially important if you have a warranty. Also, while the dry carpet cleaning method won’t damage your carpet, if it is not the method recommended by the manufacturer, it may not be the most effective cleaning method for your particular type of carpet.

Tip #6
Steam cleaning your carpets
Most manufacturers recommend steam cleaning modern carpets. However, you should only use the steam cleaning method after making sure that the carpet fibers will not be damaged by steam. A fragile carpet may be damaged by steam cleaning, but for most types of carpets, steam cleaning is considered a very effective method.
Steam cleaning uses a simple scientific process for deep cleaning carpets. This process draws the dirt from the carpet to the surface and removes it before it has a chance to stain the carpet. To steam clean a carpet, you must use a liquid-based cleaning agent that is vaporized, or turned into steam, by a steam cleaning machine, which is also called a carpet extractor or steam vacuum cleaner.
It’s always a good idea for health and the environment to choose a mild solution for steam cleaning. It will be safe for the carpet as well as the people using it. The steam cleaning machine or extractor should be self-contained and have a built-in vacuum cleaner. Alternatively, you can use the extractor first and then a vacuum cleaner.
After selecting a cleaning solution, you should follow the instructions in the user's manual and move the extractor over the carpet, being sure to cover all areas of the surface. The extractor injects the cleaning solution, in the form of steam, into the carpet and draws the dirt to the surface. It only takes a few minutes to complete this process. The extractor removes the dirt with the cleaning solution using air at a very high pressure. After extraction, you should vacuum the carpet to ensure complete removal of the dirt.
Steam cleaning your carpet, which is also referred to as extraction, is very effective at deep cleaning. It not only cleans the surface of the carpet, but also cleans the carpet base and fibers deep down. Depending on your budget and requirements, choose extractors with motors with the right amount of power. Also choose the accessories, like brushes and cords, that will be most helpful for your needs.

Tip #7
Best methods to clean your carpets
There is no one “best cleaning method.” While Hot Water Extraction is almost universally considered the deepest cleaning and most effective,
it can’t be used on, say silk carpeting, which can’t get wet. Depending on what brand of carpet, it can’t be used on wool either, as heat may damage it.
Every method cleans to a different intensity and depth, and while deep cleaning should be done every year, it is sometimes a good idea to do a less intense cleaning between deep cleanings. This will keep your carpet presentable and extend its life.
If a company utilizes only one method of cleaning, you should make sure that that method is best suited for your need at that time, as no two methods are exactly the same. Only the deep cleanings, though, can really get all the unwanted materials out, which may be ingrained in your carpet and should always be done at least once a year. These materials may even be a risk to your physical health, as germs and bacteria often make their home in your carpet, if you let them. Vacuuming regularly and even dry carpet cleaning methods might not always get them out of your families carpet.
You should always look into whatever companies you associate with, as not all companies do the same job. What methods they use may vary, or how long they’ve been doing this job? What kind of reputation they have in your area? All these things should factor into choosing which company you trust to use your desired method of Carpet Cleaning.
